How to

help our waters

Collective action!

What action should our Report Cards inspire?

The wave of collaboration behind Waterways Report Cards is recognition of something our rivers and waters have always understood: that it is through forming connections, moving together, and maintaining an open flow of conversation that we will reach our collective destination.

Together, we can:

Invest in water quality

Healthy water is critical for all life to thrive. We’re in this with all other animals, fish, birds, and plants. Prioritising water quality is critical for our collective future.

Keep an eye on runoff

Every time it rains, pollutants get pushed off roads, factories, and farms. We can prevent and report pollution at every stage before it reaches our waterways.

Graphic of a pesticide bottle

Reduce use of fertilisers and pesticides

Chemicals and nutrients wash into our waterways from homes, farms, and town. Reducing our use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides tackles these silent pollutants.

Stay smart about septic systems

Let’s keep an eye on the effectiveness of our wastewater systems. From residents to rivers to Reef, our urban wastewater has a long life after flush.

Get involved in creek restoration

Trees, mangroves, shrubs, and grasses can be a waterway’s best defence against runoff and erosion. Planting, weeding, and protecting vegetation is key.

Tidy up Townsville!

Litter is a cumulative and collective challenge. Let’s show our waters the love and fight back against local litter and dumping.

Become a citizen scientist

Collect data and contribute to environmental monitoring.

Fish sustainably

Follow seasonal closures, catch and size limits, and zoning rules to support healthy fisheries and ecosystems.

Minimise your carbon footprint

Use energy efficient appliances, make conscious diet choices, and walk, ride, carpool or take public transport when you can.
