Grants open for Townsville projects

$150,000 in grants are now available to kickstart 6 community- and Traditional Owner-led projects that will reduce threats to the Great Barrier Reef.

Townsville’s first Community Action Plan for Rivers and Reef is now live. The Plan details the issues, ideas, and projects that the people of Townsville want to see prioritised for the health of their waterways.

Community, Traditional Owner, and local business groups are encouraged to apply for funding to kickstart on-ground projects mapped by our community to see more:

  • Trees for schools

  • Corals for reefs

  • Healthier soils

  • Riparian health

  • Caring for Country

  • Electrical vehicles for community transport

Project roadmaps have been developed through community consultation and can be seen here:

“Our annual Townsville Dry Tropics Waterways Report Card showed us that the health of our local rivers, creeks, and coastal waters is vitally connected to the future of our Reef and region,” says our Executive Officer, Kara-Mae Coulter-Atkins.

“The new Community Action Plan empowers Townsville to actively address the issues it sees as crucial for the Reef, with a significant focus on caring for our waterways.”

Applications close Thursday 30 November 2023 at 4.00pm AEST.

The development of Townsville’s Community Action Plan (CAP) has been led by the Dry Tropics Partnership for Healthy Waters and Reef Ecologic. Funding is provided by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
